After attending the competition in 2011, Abré Steyn made the following comment in an article for Farmer’s Weekly on 29 April 2011: “Many tiger fishing competitions take place at Pongola each year. The Let it Swim event is by no means the largest, but to my mind, it’s the most significant.”
What makes the Let it Swim TFT unique is that it is a limited field on a first-come-first-served basis. The figure has been agreed upon with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and we believe that this represents the ideal size competition in terms of boat numbers, accommodation and the general vibe. Participants come from far and wide and even include a few international anglers. What’s even more unique is that it is the length of the fish, not its weight, which determines points scored. All fish caught are measured against a template and returned live to the water to avoid injuries and mortality caused by weighing and extensive handling. Qualifying fish (over 500mm) are photographed and sent through, via e-mail, to the score master where they are logged on computer.
Apart from its unique ethos, part of the tournament’s prestige comes from the generous support of its dedicated sponsors. Abré Steyn sang their praises in his 2011 Farmer’s Weekly article, saying “The long list of sponsors such as Honda Marine, Red Heart Rum and Shayamoya Tiger Fishing and Game Lodge must be commended for supporting such a positive development in South African angling.”

“This event is very well run and deserves all the support it can get. All those who assisted by donating prizes, cash, time and effort, I am sure, got their money’s worth. Finding events such as this that support the release and care of the fish they are targeting is a great step forward.” (Lionel Crow, Angler’s Talk, June 2011)
