17th Let It Swim Tigerfishing Tournament – 2014

An excerpt from the African Fisherman

The 17th Let It Swim Tigerfishing Tournament was staged once again at Jozini Dam over the 11th and 12th of April 2014. The weather conditions appeared perfect and the general consensus among most of the anglers was that this year would see some serious numbers in terms of size and quantity of qualifying fish recorded. How wrong we all were and the fishing proved to be very hard. Reports came in that significantly higher numbers of smaller fish than normal were being caught – not a bad sign for the tigerfish population in the dam, but perhaps an explanation as to why only 13 qualifiers (last year there were 42) of 500mm+ were boated and recorded. As always, with this species, there were also many encouraging reports of sizeable hook-ups without being boated, so the big fish were indeed out there!

Only four tigerfish exceeding 600mm were recorded and the top angling results are as follows:-
1st Place – Cliff Reid (Team RobRoy) – 660mm – Winning R10 000, a R5 000 Gift Voucher from Rapala VMC and Roam
Free, a free weekend for two at Shayamoya Tiger Fishing and Game Lodge, a framed and numbered ‘Striped Ambush’
tigerfish print by Craig Bertram Smith together with numerous sponsor prizes bringing the total 1st Place prize value to approximately R25 000.
2nd Place – Keith Duffield (Team Antalis Graphics) – 650mm – Winning a R2 500 Gift Voucher from Rapala VMC and Roam Free, a numbered and signed ‘Striped Ambush’ canvas print and numerous other sponsor prizes bringing the
value to approximately R6 000. Keith also won the cash prize and Floating Trophy for Longest Tigerfish – Printing Industry sponsored by Intamarket Graphics.
3rd Place – Daryl Scott (Team Over Africa) – 620mm – Winning a R1 250 Gift Voucher from Rapala VMC and Roam Free together with numerous other sponsor prizes bringing the value to approximately R3 000.
Team Prize – Most Tiger Fish Recorded – Team Jontiki 2 (John Turner, Neill Hopkins and Charles Dean) with 26 fish recorded irrespective of size.
Longest Tiger Fish on Fly – Adrian Tanner (Team Bad Ballie) – Winning a Fly Fishing Hamper sponsored and put together by Fly Fishers Unlimited and XPlorer Fly Fishing together with other sponsor prizes valued at approximately R5 000.
Fishtube.TV Best Release Prize – Daryl Scott (Team Over Africa) – RCI Resorts one week getaway for up to six people.
Biggest Barbel – Gino Figolio (Team King Fisher 550)
